Our History

August 21, 1971 marked the inaugural meeting of the International Perinatal Collegium, when 31 physicians from 10 countries, all interested in newborn care, gathered informally in the quiet quayside Swedish town of Lysekil.  Under the leadership of the late Dr Alvar Swensson, a renowned pediatric intensivist and anesthetist, the group shared a recognition that the burgeoning subspeciality of neonatology-perinatology needed its own forum – fulfilling a need that was not being met by the conventional obstetrics/pediatrics meetings of the time.

Since that first meeting, the IPC has continued to convene every other year, and following each meeting, has subsequently published extensive proceedings to share learnings at the rapidly-evolving nexus of obstetrics, anesthesia and neonatology.

The many advancements in care addressed at IPC bi-annual meetings and proceedings have ranged from the early development of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and pioneering studies of maternal-infant attachment to more current issues such gene regulation, use of nitric oxide, surfactants and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).   As the burgeoning field of neonatology has continued to progress, IPC also has been at the forefront of discussions regarding the ethics and practice of neonatal resuscitation.

Complementing the formal presentation of papers, the organization itself is informal by design, to encourage collaboration, personal networking and scientific exchange across interconnected specialties.

Our Mission

We are dedicated to advancing the subspeciality of perinatal intensive care through international fellowship, discussion and multicultural exploration.
